Parent Safety Guide · Last verified 2026-08-16
Is ChatGPT safe for kids? Here is what parents need to know.
ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13. OpenAI requires users to be at least 13, or the higher minimum age in their country, and users under 18 need parent or guardian permission. OpenAI now provides linked teen parental controls, but those controls cannot read the teen's conversations. For education involving a child under 13, OpenAI says the adult must conduct the actual interaction. This guide separates those provider rules from KidsAiTools editorial recommendations.
What does OpenAI itself say about ChatGPT and kids?
OpenAI's Terms of Use require users to be at least 13 or the higher minimum age required in their country. Anyone under 18 needs parent or guardian permission. OpenAI's age guidance also says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13 and, in an education context involving children under 13, the actual interaction must be conducted by an adult.
OpenAI provides linked teen parental controls for selected settings and quiet hours. These controls cannot read the teen's conversations or provide real-time monitoring. They are controls for a linked teen account, not permission for a child under 13 to operate ChatGPT independently.
What can actually go wrong with a 6-12 year-old using ChatGPT?
OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can produce output that is inaccurate or inappropriate for some audiences and ages. A younger child may have fewer habits for checking confident errors, separating a chatbot from a person, or recognizing when a topic needs an adult.
KidsAiTools editorial recommendation: for ages 6-12, use an adult-operated, time-boxed session and verify important answers together. This is our guidance, not an OpenAI platform rule or an external-expert conclusion.
When is ChatGPT actually fine to share with your child?
For a child under 13, OpenAI says the adult must conduct the actual interaction in an education context. KidsAiTools editorial recommendation is to keep the adult at the keyboard, choose a narrow learning task, avoid personal information, and check important claims against a reliable source.
What we built instead, and why
KidsAiTools is the AI-learning platform we built for our own family. It is opinionated about the things ChatGPT is intentionally neutral on: it expects a parent to sit alongside for the first few days, it has no kid-to-kid messaging, and it is designed for ages 6-12 specifically. It is not a replacement for ChatGPT for older kids â it is the on-ramp that gets younger kids comfortable with AI without any of the failure modes above.

A side-by-side, factual comparison of what each tool ships today. We deliberately avoid words like "safer" or "better" â the right call depends on your child and how much you plan to be involved.
