Most "best AI tools for kids" lists are long, and that is the tell. A list of forty tools is a list nobody has actually used with a child.
This one has five. Every entry meets three conditions:
- It runs in a browser with no account and no card. Nothing to install, nothing to cancel, nothing that needs your email.
- The child acts before the machine does. This rules out most of the category — anything where a child types a wish and receives a finished artefact.
- It teaches something specific about how AI works — not as a lesson, as a side effect of playing.
What most lists leave out is the part that decides whether the tool is worth anything: what to actually do with it. A great tool with no plan produces four minutes of poking and a bored child. Each entry below has a play plan — the setup line, the sequence, and the one moment that makes it land.

Two notes before the plans, because they change how you read the table.
"Ceiling" matters more than "best." A tool with a low ceiling is not a bad tool — Quick, Draw! is the best first door there is. It just means you should plan its retirement from the start. Most parent frustration with kids' AI tools is really a ceiling problem: the tool was right for two weeks and then became a toy the child had outgrown, and nobody had the next one ready.
Scratch is on this list and it is not an AI tool. That is deliberate. It is the most reliable place a 8-to-12-year-old learns the one skill that transfers directly to working with AI: that a result comes from instructions you designed, and when it is wrong, your instructions were wrong. Children who have built something in Scratch write dramatically better prompts, and they debug instead of re-rolling.
What is deliberately not here
Being explicit, because the omissions are the useful part of any review.
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Not because they are bad — because as of August 2026, by their own published terms, your primary-school child cannot hold an account:

They belong in a family's AI life — on your account, with you in the room. That is a different thing from a tool your child can be handed, and it deserves its own plan rather than a slot in a directory.
"AI tutor" and "AI homework helper" apps. The category is enormous, and none of them earns a place here for a 6-to-12-year-old, for a structural reason rather than a quality one: they optimise for producing the answer. Even the ones that "explain step by step" are answering. What a child needs at this age is to be stuck for a moment with someone noticing — and that is a person, not a product.
Anything with an open chat box aimed at children. An open box invites the child to bring their whole life to a system that cannot hold it, and it maximises the surface where things go wrong. The tools above are narrow on purpose. Narrowness is the feature.
AI image generators, for session one. They arrive later, on your account, and they are genuinely valuable — but as the fourth thing, not the first. There is a reason, and it is in the plan for the finger-counting session below.
