Most parents' AI account is configured for one person: them. Then a child leans over the shoulder and asks a question, and the assistant answers it exactly the way it would answer an adult — helpfully, completely, and at entirely the wrong level.
That is not a safety failure. It is a configuration failure, and it takes half an hour to fix properly.
This guide is the thirty minutes. At the end you will have an AI account that behaves differently when your child is in the chair: it asks before it answers, it refuses to do homework, it keeps the reading level where it belongs, and it routes anything sensitive back to you.

What this fixes, precisely
Four failure modes, all of which show up within the first week of a child using an adult account:
The complete answer. Your child asks how volcanoes work. The assistant produces four paragraphs at an adult reading level, correct and useless. The child skims it, says "cool," learns nothing.
The homework machine. "Write a story about a dog for school." It writes an excellent story about a dog. Your child now has a decision to make that you would rather they never had to make at eight years old.
The unbounded conversation. A child asks a chatbot the sort of question they would once have asked a parent — about death, about something that frightened them, about their body. A general assistant answers it. Reasonably, probably. But that was your conversation to have.
The invisible session. You have no idea any of the above happened.
Configuration fixes the first three outright and makes the fourth largely unnecessary.

If your child is under 13, none of these is theirs to hold. The setup below is for your account, used with your child — which is the arrangement the terms actually contemplate, and the one that works better regardless.
