There is a Google tool that most parents have never opened and that solves a problem every parent has: a child who has to learn something from a document they will not read.
NotebookLM takes files you give it — a textbook chapter, a worksheet, an article — and answers questions only from those files, with citations. It also turns them into a two-host audio discussion that sounds like a podcast.
That combination is unusually well suited to family use, and this guide covers the three things it is genuinely good for, the one thing it is not, and the exact workflow for each.

Why this tool is different from a chatbot
One property changes everything: it is grounded in sources you choose.
A general assistant answers from everything it absorbed during training, which means it can be confidently wrong about your child's specific textbook. NotebookLM answers from the PDF you uploaded, and cites which part it came from.
For schoolwork, that difference is enormous:
