Fairness: Does this AI system treat everyone equally? Could it be unfair to some groups of people?

Transparency: Can we understand how this AI makes decisions? Can we question it?

What kinds of content does the algorithm consistently show them? What does it seem to avoid? Who might be getting a different algorithmic experience?

The Decision-Making Case Study: Discuss a real case of AI bias that was documented and corrected. How was the bias discovered? Who raised the concern? What was the response? Could it have been prevented?

Questions for deeper thinking:

  • What would it take to make an AI system fair?
  • Can an AI ever be completely unbiased? Should that be the goal?
  • Who should be responsible for fixing AI bias when it is discovered?
  • What should you do if you think an AI system is treating you or others unfairly?

Practical Activities for Learning AI Ethics

The Sorting Game

Create a list of decisions and ask your child to sort them: Which would be okay for AI to make? Which would require human oversight? Which should never be made by AI alone?

Examples to sort:

  • Which song to play next on a playlist
  • Whether a student should be admitted to a college
  • Whether someone should be approved for a bank loan
  • Which news article appears at the top of a search
  • Whether a person is considered a security risk at an airport
  • What medication dosage to recommend for a patient

The discussion about where children place each decision reveals their developing ethical reasoning. There are no definitively correct answers, which makes for rich conversation.

Look at any dataset or collection together and ask "who is missing?" Browse stock photo libraries for images of doctors, scientists, or engineers. Look at the illustrations in a textbook. Examine who appears in advertisements for tech products.

Ask: If an AI was trained only on these images, what would it think a doctor looks like? A scientist? A CEO?

What happened: A 10-year-old asked ChatGPT about World War II for a history project. The AI provided accurate historical information but included graphic descriptions of violence that upset the child.

What to do:
