Almost everything a child does with AI is using it. Twenty minutes of training one teaches more than a year of using them — and it is free, needs no account, and produces a game they will make you play.
By the end of this workshop your child will have built a working AI that recognises their hand gestures, then deliberately broken it three times to find out why it fails. That second half is the part that matters.

Why training beats using
When a child uses ChatGPT, the machine is a black box that produces answers. They can learn to prompt it well, but the thing itself stays magic.
When a child trains a model, three things become concrete that no explanation can deliver:
Where the knowledge comes from. They made the examples. Twenty photos of their own hand. The model knows what it knows because they showed it — and they watched themselves do the showing.
Why it fails. When it misreads a gesture, the child does not think "it's broken." They think "I didn't show it that." That is an enormous difference in mental model, and it transfers directly to every AI they will ever use.
That bias is mechanical, not mysterious. Train it only on adult hands, test it on a child's hand, watch it fail. No lecture about algorithmic bias will land like watching it happen to your own model in ninety seconds.
That last experiment is the reason this workshop exists.

Why this tool and not something newer: it is the only widely-available tool where a child can see the entire training set they created. Newer AI toys hide that. Visibility of the training data is the whole pedagogical point.
