Rule 4: Consider the topic.

Well-known topics (how photosynthesis works, what caused World War II) are more reliable than obscure or very recent topics. If you are asking about something from last week's news, be extra skeptical.

Rule 5: If something sounds too good, too specific, or too perfect, check it.

Hallucinations often sound impressively detailed. Real information tends to come with nuances and caveats.

  • Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): Connecting AI to databases of verified information so it can check facts before responding
