Write Your Family's Song
Version 2.8 — Updated August 2026 | Reviewed by Felix Zhao
An hour-long workshop producing a real 2-3 minute song with words your child wrote. The AI composes and performs; the child writes and directs.
Write Your Family's Song
There is a category of AI output that children scroll past, and a category they play for relatives on speakerphone. A song about your own family is firmly in the second.
This workshop produces one: a real, listenable song, about 2-3 minutes, with words your child wrote. It takes about an hour. The AI composes and performs; the child writes and directs.
Last verified: August 2026. Tool: Suno — free tier sufficient for this workshop.
Why this project is different from the others
Most AI projects produce something to look at. This one produces something that gets played — in the car, at dinner, on a phone held up to a grandparent.
That changes the economics of the afternoon. A picture goes on the fridge; a song enters the family's rotation. Children ask to hear their own song dozens of times, and every play is a small reinforcement that they made something real.
What it teaches, without being taught:
- Lyrics are constrained writing — you cannot say everything, so you must choose
- Structure is audible (verse/chorus is a pattern a child can hear working)
- Specific beats general: "Dad burns the toast every Saturday" lands, "we love our family" does not
That last one is the most transferable writing lesson in this entire series, and a song teaches it in one sitting because vague lyrics sound obviously bad.
What you need
| Time | 50-70 minutes |
| Tool | Suno — free tier gives a few generations per day, enough for this |
| Cost | Free tier is sufficient. Do not upgrade mid-project. |
| Ages | 6-12. Younger children dictate lyrics; older ones write them. |
| Also | Paper. Somewhere to play music out loud. |
On accounts: Suno requires an account and, like most generative tools, is aimed at adults. This runs on a parent's account with the parent operating it. Check the current terms when you sign up — they change.
The shape
| Step | Time | What |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 min | Collect the specifics (paper, no computer) |
| 2 | 15 min | Turn them into a chorus and verses |
| 3 | 5 min | Choose the sound |
| 4 | 15 min | Generate and choose |
| 5 | 10 min | Play it for someone |
