The AI Safety Checklist for Parents
10 things to verify before your child uses any AI tool — based on 8 weeks of hands-on testing with 40+ tools.
Why this checklist exists
You've searched "is ChatGPT safe for kids" or "best AI tools for my 8-year-old" and landed on contradictory advice. Some sites say "all AI is dangerous," others say "just let them explore." Neither is helpful.
This checklist is what we actually use when evaluating every AI tool on KidsAiTools.com. It takes 5 minutes to run through for any new app or service — and it will catch 90% of the problems before your child ever sees them.
1. Privacy & Data Collection ⚠️
Check the Privacy Policy for these red flags:
- Does the tool require a real name? (Most kid-safe tools use avatars/usernames.)
- Is it COPPA compliant (for US users under 13)? Look for explicit language.
- Is it GDPR-K compliant (for EU users under 16)?
- Does it sell or share data with third parties?
- Can you delete all data on request? How?
How to verify: Ctrl+F the privacy policy for "sell", "share", "third party", "advertising", "personalize ads". If these appear near "children's data" or "minor", walk away.
2. Age Requirements ⚠️
Don't lie about age — but do verify the tool's own stated age range.
- Minimum age clearly stated (e.g., "13+" or "8+")?
- Does it match your child's actual age?
- Is there a parent-supervised mode for younger users?
Common mismatches:
- ChatGPT: Stated 13+ (often misunderstood as "safe at 13")
- Midjourney: 13+ on its own Discord, 18+ in terms of service
- Character.AI: 13+ with parental notice
3. Content Filters ⚠️
Can the tool generate inappropriate content, even by accident?
- Does the tool have an active content filter?
- What happens when you type a borderline prompt? (Test it yourself first.)
- Can you turn safe mode on and off?
- Are images pre-screened or post-screened?
Red flag test: Before giving any AI image generator to your child, try prompts like "scary monster", "ninja fighting", "bloody sword". If the results shock you, they'll shock your child.
4. Advertising & In-App Purchases ⚠️
Free tools aren't free — know what you're paying with.
- Are there ads? How targeted?
- Are there in-app purchases your child can trigger?
- Is there a purchase password/PIN requirement?
- Do "free trials" auto-convert to paid subscriptions?
Setting to change today: On iOS, go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → iTunes & App Store Purchases → In-App Purchases → Don't Allow. This single setting has saved us from unwanted charges more than anything else.
5. Chat & Social Features ⚠️
If the AI lets your child talk to strangers, it's not just an AI tool anymore.
- Is there public chat / community features?
- Can strangers contact your child via the AI?
- Are usernames anonymous or real?
- Is there moderation (human or AI)?
If the answer to any of these is "yes", the tool is now social media, and it needs social-media-level parental supervision.
6. AI Hallucination Risk 🤔
AI makes things up. Is your child equipped to notice?
- Have you had the "AI can be wrong" conversation with your child?
- Does the tool warn about inaccuracies?
- Can your child cross-check against a trusted source?
- For homework help: does it cite sources?
Rule of thumb: If your child would blindly trust the AI the way they'd trust a textbook, they need to be older, or you need to supervise every session.
7. Screen Time Impact 🤔
The best AI tool is still a screen time decision.
- Is this replacing or adding to existing screen time?
- Does the tool have natural stopping points?
- Is there a session time limit option?
- What's the alternative activity you're substituting?
Healthy framing: "You can spend 20 minutes making AI art today, or 20 minutes reading, or 20 minutes outside. Which two do you want?" This teaches trade-offs, not restriction.
8. Creativity vs. Passive Consumption 🤔
Is your child making something with the AI, or is the AI making something for them to watch?
- Does the tool require active input from your child?
- Is the output something they can own/share/revisit?
- Does the child understand what the AI did vs. what they did?
- Can they explain the result to a friend?
Green light: Tools that start with a blank canvas. Red flag: Tools where the kid just scrolls through AI outputs.
9. Emotional Dependency Risk 🤔
This is the one most parents underestimate.
- Does the tool encourage daily use through streaks/notifications?
- Are there "virtual friend" or "AI companion" features?
- Does your child express negative emotions when they can't use it?
- Is the AI replacing human interaction, or augmenting it?
Specific concern: Character.AI and similar "AI friend" apps have documented cases of kids forming emotional attachments that affect offline relationships. Read the news stories before deciding.
10. Exit Strategy 🎯
You will want to take this tool away someday. Plan for it now.
- Can you pause/disable the account without losing data?
- Is there a graceful way to transition to a different tool?
- What's your "if things go wrong" plan?
- Are there alternatives your child already likes?
The test: If you told your child "no more [tool X] after this week", would there be a meltdown? If yes, the tool has already built more emotional hook than you're comfortable with.
The 5-Minute Rule
Before your child uses any AI tool for the first time, you should have spent at least 5 minutes using it yourself, with the content filter on, trying the kinds of prompts your child might try.
If you can't commit 5 minutes to that, the tool is too low-priority to let your child use.
