CapCut's terms set a minimum age of 13 and require parent consent under 18. See its AI features, app ratings and the settings to check before saying yes.

CapCut is not built for children under 13. Its own Terms of Service say the service is only intended for people 13 and older, and teens under 18 may use it only with a parent's or guardian's consent. For a teenager, it can be a reasonable creative tool if you set it up together. For a younger child, CapCut's own parent guide says independent use is not recommended. CapCut Terms of Service · CapCut parent guide

The age rule is only part of the answer. CapCut now includes AI tools that can animate a photo, swap faces and build an avatar from a short video. We could not find any parental controls inside CapCut itself, so the settings that matter live on your child's phone or tablet.

Facts checked October 15, 2026. Everything below comes from CapCut's own terms, policies and help pages, and from Apple and Google, opened on that date. KidsAiTools did not test CapCut with children, and the scripts and checklists are our own examples.

CapCut's age rules: what the official documents say

CapCut's global Terms of Service (last updated April 15, 2026) are an agreement with Bytedance Pte. Ltd. They say the service is "only intended for individuals 13 years old and older," with possible extra limits by country. If a user is over that age but under 18, or under the age of majority where they live, they may use CapCut only with a parent's or guardian's consent. CapCut Terms of Service

The Privacy Policy (last updated April 15, 2026) agrees. It says CapCut "is not directed at and is not intended for children under the age of 13." CapCut Privacy Policy

Some countries have different rules. These are the extra terms in CapCut's global Terms:

Where you live What CapCut's terms say
Most countries 13 and older. Parent or guardian consent is required until 18 or the local age of majority.
United States A separate "CapCut US Terms of Service" applies instead of the global terms. Read it in the app before your teen signs up.
South Korea 14 and older. Users from 14 up to 19 declare they have parent or guardian consent.
Indonesia 14 and older.
Brazil Under 16, a parent or guardian must accept the terms on the child's behalf. Ages 16 and 17 need a parent's or guardian's help to agree.
Thailand Under 20, users declare that a parent or guardian has acknowledged the terms and consented.
Mexico Under 18, users need parent or guardian consent.

US families: we could not open the separate US terms when we checked on October 15. CapCut's help-center parent guide, dated September 1, 2026, states the same rule (13 and older, parent consent under 18). Read the terms CapCut shows your teen at sign-up. CapCut parent guide

What CapCut's own parent guide recommends

CapCut's parent guide says the app "is generally more appropriate for teens and adults than for young children," and gives this advice by age:

  • Under 13: independent use is not recommended. If a younger child takes part in a family or school project, a parent should stay involved and avoid public posting.
  • 13 to 15: may be appropriate with parent guidance on privacy, AI use, templates and sharing.
  • 16 to 17: can be more independent, but should still understand privacy, consent, copyright and AI-generated content.

App store ratings: why they don't match the terms

App store ratings describe content. They are not the company's age requirement, so the numbers can differ.

Store Listing we checked on October 15, 2026
Google Play (US) Rated Teen, with "Users Interact, In-App Purchases." Developer: Bytedance Pte. Ltd. Last updated October 14, 2026. Google Play listing
Apple App Store (US) The listing page, as it appears in search results, shows 13+ under Apple's newer rating scale. Apple's app lookup data, which we opened directly, still reports 12+. Seller: Bytedance Pte. Ltd. Version 19.7.0, released October 8, 2026. App Store listing

Apple moved to a scale of 4+, 9+, 13+, 16+ and 18+, with ratings set by country or region. That is why older articles and school newsletters often say "12+." Apple Developer: age ratings

When the store rating and the terms disagree, use the higher number. Both stores say CapCut is free to download and offers in-app purchases.

CapCut's AI features, as CapCut describes them

Beyond trimming, captions and effects, CapCut now has generative AI tools. Here is how CapCut's own pages describe them. We have not used them with children.

Feature What CapCut says it does Why a parent should care
AI video generator (Seedance 2.5) Text-to-video, over 100 digital avatars, and you can "clone your own avatar" by uploading a short video of yourself. CapCut A child's face and voice can become a reusable avatar.
AI dialogue generator Upload a photo and lip-sync makes a still image appear to speak. CapCut Any photo can be made to say words the person never said.
AI face swap Import "any clear facial image" from the gallery and map it onto another image. Works on group photos. CapCut It can easily be used on classmates or siblings without their permission.
AI image tools Text-to-image, photo-to-anime and other AI image edits. CapCut Generated images can be mistaken for real photos.

CapCut's Terms add that some features run on third-party AI technology. The user is "solely responsible" for content made with CapCut. CapCut also says it does not promise that generated content is legal or appropriate. CapCut Terms of Service

On labeling, CapCut's Trust Center says it informs users when they are using AI features and works "to provide labels or watermarks." That is a commitment to try, not a promise that every AI clip will carry a visible label. CapCut Trustworthy AI

If your child likes face-swap or talking-photo effects, this is a good moment to talk about consent and realistic fakes. Our guide Deepfakes Explained for Kids gives you kid-level language for that conversation.

What CapCut collects, especially with AI tools

From CapCut's Privacy Policy, the points most relevant to families: CapCut Privacy Policy

  • Prompts and AI results. "User Content" includes uploaded photos, videos and audio. It also includes the prompts and files your child submits to "AI-powered interfaces," and the AI results they get back.
  • Content may be collected before it is saved. CapCut says it may collect content through "pre-uploading" when it is created, imported or uploaded, whether or not the user saves or publishes it.
  • Face and body detection. CapCut may detect "the existence and location of a face and other body parts" to run effects. The policy says this is not used to identify the user and is deleted once the effect has been applied.
  • Model training. Information may be used to "train, test, and improve technology, such as machine learning models."
  • Approximate location. Based on SIM card region and IP address.

The practical rule follows CapCut's own advice: anything your child would not want a stranger to see should not go into CapCut, even if they never post it.

Parental controls: what exists and what doesn't

We found no in-app parental controls, family pairing or supervised teen account in CapCut's Terms, Privacy Policy, Trust Center or parent guide. The parent guide points parents to device-level purchase approvals, app store restrictions and screen time instead. CapCut parent guide

In practice, your controls live on the device:

Device Setting What it does
iPhone / iPad Ask to Buy (Settings > Family > your child > Apps & Websites > Restrictions) Your child must ask before downloading an app or making an in-app purchase, whatever the app's age rating. In some places it is on by default for under-18s. Apple Support
iPhone / iPad Content & Privacy Restrictions in Screen Time Allow apps only up to an age rating, or block a specific app. A blocked app stays on the device but is dimmed. Apple Support
Android Google Play content restrictions Limits what can be downloaded by maturity rating, on that device only. Apps installed before you turned it on stay visible, so block those through Family Link. Purchase approvals cover Google Play billing only. Google Play Help

One gap: CapCut also runs in a web browser, which app store settings don't cover.

The decision, by age

Your child A sensible approach
Under 13 No account of their own. For a family video, use CapCut on your device and account, with your child beside you choosing clips and music. Skip the face, voice and avatar AI tools.
13 to 15 Yes, with your consent and the setup session below. Nothing public without a check-in; no face swap on real people without their permission.
16 to 17 More independence, the same rules on other people's faces and voices, and a regular check-in about what they publish.

A 15-minute setup session with your teen

Do this together, on their device:

  1. Read the age and consent lines together in the terms CapCut shows at sign-up. Your consent is part of the deal.
  2. Check the publisher before installing. Both stores list Bytedance Pte. Ltd. CapCut itself warns against "modded" or "premium free" versions. CapCut safety guide
  3. Turn on purchase approval (Ask to Buy or Google Play purchase approval).
  4. Review app permissions for camera, microphone and photos. Allow only what the next project needs.
  5. Agree where the finished video goes: saved to the camera roll, shared privately or posted publicly. Editing is not the same as publishing.
  6. Agree the AI rule below, out loud.

A family agreement you can copy

Our CapCut agreement

1. I edit my own clips. I don't upload other people's faces or
   voices unless they said yes.
2. I don't use face swap, avatars or talking-photo tools on
classmates, teachers, siblings or anyone who didn't agree.
3. Before I post anything public, I check it with [parent] for:
my full name, school, uniform, street, house number or license plate.
4. I don't upload private family moments, documents or screenshots
of chats, even if I'm only editing and not posting.
5. If something I made with AI could fool someone into thinking
it's real, I label it or I don't post it.
6. No purchases or subscriptions without asking.

We'll look at this again on [date].

What to say if your 10-year-old asks for CapCut

"CapCut's own rules say it's for 13 and up, so you can't have your
own account yet. But we can make a video together on my phone this
weekend. You pick the clips and the music, I'll drive."

What to do this week

  • Ask whether your child already uses CapCut on any device or in a browser.
  • Turn on Ask to Buy or Google Play purchase approval.
  • If your child is 13 or older, run the 15-minute setup and sign the agreement.
  • If your child is under 13, plan one parent-run video project together.

FAQ

What age is CapCut for?

13 and older under CapCut's Terms of Service, with parent or guardian consent under 18. South Korea and Indonesia set 14 as the minimum, and the US has separate terms.

Does CapCut have parental controls?

We found no parental controls inside CapCut in its official terms, policies or help pages as of October 15, 2026. CapCut's parent guide recommends device-level tools instead, such as app store purchase approvals and screen time settings.

Is CapCut OK for a 12-year-old?

CapCut's own parent guide says a 12-year-old should not use it independently. If you allow a specific project, CapCut says a parent should supervise, avoid public sharing and keep personal information out of the video.

Is CapCut's face swap safe for kids?

CapCut's face swap maps any clear facial image onto another picture. The main risk is using other people's faces without permission. Set a family rule: no face swap or avatars of real people who haven't agreed.

Does CapCut use my child's videos to train AI?

CapCut's Privacy Policy says information may be used to train and improve technology, including machine learning models, and that prompts and AI results count as user content. Keep private or sensitive material out of CapCut.

Setting it up for your family

You now know CapCut's rules and settings. The harder part is the conversation: what your teen is allowed to post, what happens when a friend sends them a face-swapped clip, and how to revisit the rules as they get older. That "how in my family" part is what the KidsAiTools Parent Library is for.

To start today, check which devices your child uses and turn on purchase approval on each one.
