These are not hypothetical questions. They are urgent realities that most parents have not considered. The intersection of children's data privacy and AI tools is one of the most important and least discussed issues in modern parenting.

The Data AI Collects

Every AI interaction generates data. The specific data varies by tool, but generally includes:

Conversation data: Everything your child types into a chatbot is recorded. This includes questions, personal stories, homework content, and any information they volunteer.

Usage data: How often they use the tool, how long each session lasts, what features they use, what time of day they are active.

Device data: IP address (which reveals approximate location), device type, operating system, browser type.

The gap: Many AI tools technically require users to be 13 or older, which shifts responsibility to parents. When a child uses ChatGPT (which requires age 13+), they are technically violating the terms of service, and COPPA protections may not apply.

GDPR (European Union)

The General Data Protection Regulation provides:

  • Special protections for children's data (typically under 16)
  • Right to erasure (the "right to be forgotten")

Google (Teachable Machine, Quick Draw)

Google Teachable Machine processes images locally in the browser and does not upload them to Google's servers. Quick Draw collects anonymized drawings to improve its AI model, but no personal information is attached.

What parents should do: Teachable Machine is one of the safest options from a data privacy perspective. For Quick Draw, note that drawings are contributed to a public dataset, though anonymously.

Educational AI Platforms (Khan Academy, Code.org)

Educational platforms generally have stronger privacy protections because they directly serve schools and must comply with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) in addition to COPPA.

What parents should do: Review the platform's privacy policy. Most educational platforms offer parent dashboards where you can see and manage your child's data.

Practical Privacy Protection Steps

For All Families

  • Use parent accounts. Never create an AI account in your child's name if you can use your own account instead.

  • Teach the personal information rule. Your child should never share with AI: full name, address, school name, phone number, parents' workplace, financial information, or medical information.

  • Review conversations regularly. Periodically read through your child's AI chat history. Look for personal information that was shared inadvertently.

  • Use privacy settings. Every AI tool has data settings. Find them. Set them to maximum privacy. Opt out of data sharing for model improvement wherever possible.

  • Delete history periodically. Regularly clear AI conversation history. What does not exist cannot be breached or misused.

For Schools and Educators

  • Conduct privacy assessments before adopting any AI tool for classroom use
  • Obtain proper parental consent for AI tools that collect student data
  • Use educational editions of AI tools, which typically have stronger privacy protections
  • Train students on data privacy as part of AI literacy
  • Establish data retention policies specifying how long student AI data is kept

The Questions You Should Be Asking

When your child wants to use a new AI tool, ask:

  • Does this tool require an account? What information does the account require?
  • Does the company use conversation data to train their AI?
  • Can I opt out of data collection?
  • Can I see and delete my child's data?
  • Where are the company's servers located? (This affects which privacy laws apply)
  • Has the company experienced data breaches? How did they respond?
  • Is there a kid-specific or family version with enhanced privacy?

The Bigger Picture

Children's data privacy in the AI age is not just about individual tools. It is about a fundamental question: Who has the right to profit from children's data?

When a child's conversations, drawings, voice recordings, and learning patterns are collected by AI companies, that data has value. It improves AI models that generate billions in revenue. The child receives a free tool in exchange. But children cannot meaningfully consent to this trade-off, and the long-term implications are unknown.

What to do:
